Royal Navy Terror Threat!
Thursday, October 21, 2004
Alarming news from this week's IT Week. In his 'comment' column Les Hatton writes that the BAE Systems subsidiary AMS has decided to use Windows 2000 to control the Combat Management System of the navy's Type 45 destroyers and its Vanguard submarines (the ones with our Trident nuclear missiles on board). Now, if this were April 1st it might be an amusing jape of an article. As far as I know, however, the week beginning October 18 has no recognised 'pull the other one' days. Hatton is rather generous when he remarks that the decision is 'one of the most terminally stupid IT decisions of the century'. AMS has obviously been infiltrated by a terror network intent on using the UK's nuclear capbility against us. What other reason could there be for deliberately installing software that is not merely insecure but that is guaranteed to crash at vital moments? No, if true, this is quite simply the last terminally stupid idea anyone is going to have. Start praying.
