Can someone explain what happened? Am I simply spending too much time on 'the internets', where the voices of sanity - Gibson, Soros, Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, Hunter Thompson and thousands of bloggers and posters - made anything other than a Kerry victory seem unlikely?

Are we all so much up our own asses here in cyberpolls that we just assumed that everyone with a mobile phone, everyone under 40, and everyone who logged on to the net at least once a day would get out there and make a big difference? It doesn't even look close. Bush seems to have won a huge part of the popular vote. Looking at the stats for some of the mid-west States there are now vast areas that you're not going to want to visit if you have any sort of liberal bone in your body.

Depressing? Wrist-slittingly so. Old Osama will be mighty glad, however. Another thousand recruits every day for the next four years.
