Ignorance in cinema shocks nobody

Monday, December 13, 2004

On Friday evening I took Isla, Sean, and Kirstie to our local cinema to see 'The Incredibles'. Laura's car had been playing up so she took mine for work. That meant the trip to the cinema and back was on foot, which made it more of an expedition.

The 5.30 showing was poorly attended, which allowed some ignorant yob to chat loudly on his mobile during the trailers. He had a couple of small kids with him but this didn't prevent him from punctuating his inane noise with a liberal sprinkling of 'fucks'. The only consolation was that the film's script was witty enough to leave him bored after a few minutes.

The film was excellent, a truly successful blend of action and humour to appeal to children and adults, with none of the 'oh-so-clever' in-jokes of 'Shrek 2'. To cap it off there was an wonderful retro titles sequence with 60s jazz and sharp angles and shadows. The only downer about this was that it was at the end and most of the small audience (including dead brain and his unfortunate offspring) had already left. What a waste.

The night was cold (and the temperature has continued to fall throughout the week-end) and we stopped off for some very unhealthy chips on the walk back. It was just one of those evenings we could all enjoy and I'm sure the kids will remember it for a long time. They were full of the film when we got home and regaled Laura with their favourite moments. I was pleased that mobile swear man failed to get a mention.
