Daughter flees KFC

Friday, January 07, 2005

Isla returned from Barcelona last night, full of chatter and having obviously missed us all not one jot. She had little to say on the merits of the city but much about what friends had said and eaten. There were scary moment with beggars, especially in the traditional Catalan food centres like KFC. She did say, however, that she thought Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia the 'most beautiful building' she'd ever seen, which I suppose is a result of sorts for the organisers of the trip.

I went to Barcelona on a day trip with my parents in 1969 - we were on holiday on the Costa Dorada. My memories of the city are limited: there seemed to be an awful lot of cats; we were chased off the grass in a park by two policemen who used whistles rather than words; large apple turnovers called triangulos that we bought near the station and ate on the train ride along the coast back to our resort. I was the same age as Isla, coincidentally.

Ten years later I made another, very brief visit, changing buses on a trip north from Granada to Marseille. But that's another story.
