Pandora's Handbag

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

I recently discovered Elizabeth Young's 'Pandora's Handbag' in a remainder bookshop in Farringdon. It's a collection of her book reviews, essays, and writings on fiction. I'm embarrassed to say I hadn't heard of her. The fact that author bio at the front told me she was born in Nigeria and was Scottish led me to read further. Then I bought the book.

Here's what she has to say on censorship:
I don't think there is anything that should not be written about; censorship merely imports the deceit, hypocrisy and ignorance of real life into the world of imagination which is the only place in which we can, and should, be free.

Only a few years older than me, Liz Young died of hepatitis early in 2001.
