The Scottish Parliament is to pass a bill giving Gaelic official status. A short BBC report is here. It seems a rather tame response to the endgame of a tragic history. The Clearances did the real softening job on the community of speakers a long time ago. From the report:
At the last census the number of people able to speak, read or write Gaelic had fallen to 65,674 by 2001 - a drop of 20% in 20 years.
