Spain defies US on Venezuela deal

Sunday, January 15, 2006

The BBC reports (which in itself is a bit of a miracle, given its pro-US stance these days) that Spain has the cojones to refuse to bow to the US. Read the story here before the Blair Government forces them to remove it.

This is a story to feel strangely ambivalent about: will we ever see the end of the US trying to bully the world into seeing things in its crazily skewed way? At the same time, Spain have showed us the power of the word 'no'.

Wikinews also has a version of the story here.

just so you know, not all americans are pushy jerks.... In fact, the majority of us do not agree with the current situation. Maybe the current corruption scandal in DC will lead to some cleaning house, and an ultimate change in governmental philosophy... (maybe not, but we can hope)

I have been guilty of something that I hate others doing and for that I apologise. When I use the term 'American' and 'US' I am thinking of the current Bush administration and its supporters and, historically, those who have attempted to force US-centric policies in other countries - specifically in SE Asia and in Latin America. I cease from the lazy shorthand of simply using 'US', as if all its population were guilty by association with Bush. I would hate to be thought a proponent of the Iraq invasion myself, simply because I live in the UK and Blair has decided to aggrandise himself through a disastrous war. A long-winded apology, I know - but genuine. Sorry.
