Flagging

Sunday, April 23, 2006

The flags remain because it's St George's Day today. When I was younger this was often marked by the Union flag rather than the cross of St George so it's good to see a greater awareness of which flag is which among the English. (If you look at old pictures from England winning the World Cup in 1966, for instance, you'll see a lot of Union flags around Wembley. Witness also this picture of a cover of the official programme.)I remember being removed from a pub in London about 15 years ago for asking why there were Union flags strung around the bar on St George's Day. I did ask repeatedly so probably deserved to be ejected simply for being a pain in the ass as much as for being a pompous twit.

Anyway, all this discussion of flags obviously has no place in any self-respecting blog. Luckily, my inherent self-respect was obliterated during some years of sexual abuse I suffered as a child. So you may yet hear more about flags. God, but I hope not. It's a terrible thing when you start boring yourself with your own self-righteousness.

On a lighter note, I discovered a story I had written some years ago called "Beckett's Birthday". After a couple of earlier posts regarding Beckett (here and here) this was both a coincidence and a rather disturbing sign of my failing memory. I shall polish up the story as best I can and put it in the annexe in the coming week.
